Round of 16 Preview: Sixteen Left, and Canada Among Them
Available in USSomewhere in a Toronto pub this week, a group of us worked out that we had never, not once, discussed a World Cup Round of 16 with a Canadian team actually in it. That sentence still feels strange to type. Yet here we are: the group stage is history, the Round of 32 signs off tonight, and from Saturday the last 16 begins — two matches a day, win or go home, with Les Rouges opening the whole round against Morocco. The Round of 16 runs July 4–7, two ties per day. Six of the eight pairings are locked; the last two depend on tonight’s Round of 32 finales. France remain the tournament’s clear favourites at 2.95, with Argentina next around 5.70 and Spain around 7.00, as of July 3, 2026.

Saturday, July 4: Canada Open the Round
The last 16 begins with the tie every Canadian will be watching. Canada face Morocco at NRG Stadium in Houston (1:00 pm ET), with the retractable roof expected to shut out a brutal Texas heat index near 107°F. Morocco, who reached this stage by beating the Netherlands on penalties, are the favourites at 1.83 to Canada’s 5.20, with the draw 3.60 — as of July 3, 2026. The nightcap is a heavyweight test in extreme conditions: Paraguay vs France at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia (5:00 pm ET), played under an official NWS Extreme Heat Warning with the temperature forecast near 101°F at kickoff. France are as short as 1.22 to win in 90; Paraguay, giant-killers who knocked out Germany on penalties, are 18.50. Sunday, July 5: Brazil, England and the Azteca
Sunday brings two of the tournament’s glamour ties. Brazil vs Norway at MetLife Stadium (4:00 pm ET) pits the five-time champions, 1.95 favourites, against Erling Haaland’s Norway at 4.20 — a first competitive meeting between the nations. Then the day closes at altitude: Mexico vs England at the Estadio Azteca (8:00 pm ET / 6:00 pm local), where the roughly 7,000-foot elevation has become the story. England manager Thomas Tuchel was blunt about it: "My understanding is we cannot adapt to the altitude." The line is tight — Mexico 3.25, England 2.47, draw 3.25.
Monday, July 6: The All-Iberian Marquee
The tie the whole tournament has been waiting for arrives Monday. Spain vs Portugal at AT&T Stadium in Arlington (3:00 pm ET) is an all-Iberian collision — Spain still unbeaten and yet to concede a single goal, Portugal riding the emotion of Ronaldo’s first-ever knockout goal against Croatia. Spain are the 1.95 favourites to Portugal’s 4.20. The evening game is a coin-flip: USA vs Belgium at Lumen Field in Seattle (8:00 pm ET / 5:00 pm PT) is priced almost dead even at 2.72 and 2.77, though the co-hosts will be without the suspended Folarin Balogun after his red card against Bosnia.
Tuesday, July 7: The Two Ties Still Forming
The final two last-16 spots are settled tonight. Switzerland, 2-0 winners over Algeria, are locked into a July 7 tie at BC Place in Vancouver — Canadian soil again — against the winner of Colombia vs Ghana. The other Tuesday tie, in Atlanta, pairs the Australia–Egypt winner with the Argentina–Cape Verde winner. Reading the Outright Board
The knockout draw has done little to shake the top of the market. France stand alone as favourites at 2.95, Argentina next around 5.70, and Spain around 7.00, with England near 10.25 and Brazil and Portugal both around 13.50, as of July 3, 2026. Morocco (~34.0) and Colombia (~35.0) are the pick of the dark horses. Canada, realistically, are a 251.00 outright shot — but nobody backing Les Rouges right now is doing it for the outright; they are doing it one match at a time.
