There is a version of this tournament that nobody predicted, and it is the one we got. Not a bracket blown open by upsets, not a Cinderella into the last four — the opposite. The four teams left standing at the 2026 World Cup are France, Spain, England and Argentina: the four highest-ranked sides on the planet, and four past world champions. It is the first time since FIFA’s world ranking began in 1992 that the top four ranked teams have all reached the same World Cup semi-finals. The chaos of a 48-team tournament funnelled, in the end, to the four names you would have written down before a ball was kicked. Now they play two games in two days to decide who reaches MetLife Stadium on 19 July. This is the preview: every tie, every number, every storyline worth knowing before the whistle.

Four champions, two semi-finals, one final in New Jersey — the bracket has narrowed to its sharpest point.

Below is the full picture: the schedule, the 1X2 lines (single-book, screen-verified on the morning of 14 July), the outright board with France a clear favourite and a genuine argument over second, the Golden Boot race that is tied at the top, and the team news that will settle both games. For the day’s value angles across both ties, our July 14–15 semi-final predictions walks through the picks. For the deeper reads, our France vs Spain semi-final prediction and England vs Argentina semi-final prediction go long on each match-up.

How the Last Four Got Here
The quarter-finals did their job with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of quality. France beat Morocco 2-0 at Gillette Stadium on 9 July — Mbappé and Dembélé the scorers — to reach a third straight World Cup semi-final. Spain beat Belgium 2-1 at SoFi Stadium on 10 July, a result that ended their tournament-long clean-sheet run but sent them through. Then the Saturday double went to extra time twice: England edged Norway 2-1 after extra time at Hard Rock Stadium, and Argentina beat Switzerland 3-1 after extra time at Arrowhead Stadium. Two of the four semi-finalists needed an extra 30 minutes to get here; two did not — a small detail that may matter more than it looks over the next 48 hours.
Eliminated in the quarter-finals: Morocco, Belgium, Norway and Switzerland. Norway’s first-ever World Cup quarter-final ended in extra time; Switzerland’s first since 1954 ended the same way. The tournament’s outsiders had their runs, and the tournament’s aristocracy closed the door.
SF1 — France vs Spain: The Final Before the Final
The line both coaches keep using is that this is “a final before the final,” and the numbers back the billing. France arrive as the tournament’s best attack — 16 goals in six games, a perfect six wins from six, with Mbappé level at the top of the Golden Boot on 8. Spain arrive as the tournament’s best defence — one goal conceded all tournament, a run of six straight World Cup clean sheets (the longest in the competition’s history) only ended by Belgium in the quarter-final. Best attack against best defence, in Dallas, in the last four.
The market makes France the favourite, but not by a landslide. SF1 line: France 2.35 (+135), draw 3.10 (+210), Spain 3.10 (+210) (FanDuel via CBS Sports, 13 July 19:49 ET) — the draw and Spain shortened mildly through the rest day, France flat. The history is Spain’s: the two nations have met only once before at a World Cup — France won that 2006 round-of-16 tie 3-1 — but Spain have won the two most recent meetings that mattered, the Euro 2024 semi-final (2-1) and the 2025 Nations League semi-final (5-4). Kickoff is 15:00 ET (14:00 CDT) at AT&T Stadium, and the retractable roof will almost certainly be closed against the Dallas July heat, giving Spain the dry, quick surface their passing game prefers. For the full match-up, see our France vs Spain semi-final prediction.
SF2 — England vs Argentina: A Rivalry Reawakened
If SF1 is a tactical study, SF2 is a story with history in every corner. England and Argentina meet at a World Cup for the first time since 2002 — the David Beckham penalty in Sapporo — and the fixture drags with it 1986 (the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century) and 1998 (Beckham’s red card, England out on penalties). Thomas Tuchel’s England are chasing a first World Cup final since 1966; Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina are chasing something rarer still — a successful defence of the trophy, which only Italy (1934–38) and Brazil (1958–62) have managed.
The line is tighter than SF1. SF2: England 2.55–2.65, draw 2.90–3.00, Argentina 3.00–3.05 (FanDuel via SI / DraftKings, 12 July) — the freshest reading available, worth re-checking on the morning of the game. England are marginal favourites on paper; Argentina carry the tournament’s leading attack after France (17 goals) and, in Messi, the joint-top scorer and the man who still holds the all-time World Cup goal record at 21. The one hard team-news certainty: England are without the suspended Jarell Quansah, serving the final game of a two-match ban. Kickoff is 15:00 ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Our England vs Argentina semi-final prediction has the deep read.
The Outright Board: France Clear, and an Argument Over Second
Outright markets tell you what the sharps think, and right now they think one thing clearly and one thing not at all. France are the clear, unanimous favourite. Everything behind them is contested.
Selection Odds (decimal) Book As of (ET)
France 2.37 – 2.50 FanDuel (via FOX) / DraftKings (via SI) 13 Jul ~14:15 → 14 Jul AM
Spain 4.20 – 4.33 FanDuel (via FOX) / DraftKings (via SI) 13 Jul ~14:15 → 14 Jul AM
England 4.10 – 4.40 FanDuel (via FOX) / DraftKings (via SI) 13 Jul ~14:15 → 14 Jul AM
Argentina 4.60 – 5.50 DraftKings / FOX / Oddspedia 13 Jul ~14:15 → 14 Jul AM
The story in the numbers is the fight for second favourite. FanDuel ranks England (4.10) ahead of Spain (4.20); DraftKings ranks Spain (4.20) ahead of England (4.40). Argentina is the longest of the four on most books (~5.30–5.50 on FanDuel and Oddspedia) but DraftKings tightens the holders to 4.60 — a genuine spread worth shopping if you fancy Scaloni’s side. The 24-hour picture is a market compressing at the top: Spain and England ranges have both narrowed, Argentina has drifted on most books, and France sits flat and clear. For the live board as it moves, our World Cup 2026 odds hub tracks every shift.
A close-up of the golden World Cup trophy under stadium floodlights, four national-flag ribbons — blue, red, white — softly out of focus behind it Four teams, one trophy: France are the market’s clear favourite, but the fight for second favourite splits the books.
Golden Boot: Level at the Top, and One Race Frozen
The Golden Boot is as tight as the outright is clear. Mbappé and Messi are level on 8 goals each; Mbappé is favourite on the assists tiebreak (3 to 2). Behind them, Norway’s Erling Haaland is frozen on 7 — eliminated in the quarter-final, he can no longer add — leaving England’s Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham on 6 apiece as the only realistic challengers still playing.
Player Country Goals Odds (decimal) As of (ET)
Kylian Mbappé FRA 8 1.71 – 2.10 13 Jul → 14 Jul AM
Lionel Messi ARG 8 2.45 13 Jul → 14 Jul AM
Harry Kane ENG 6 13.00 13 Jul
Jude Bellingham ENG 6 14.00 – 26.00 13 Jul / 14 Jul AM
Only players from the four surviving nations can add to the tally now, which sharpens the race beautifully: the two leaders play in the two semi-finals, one against the tournament’s best defence, the other against a settled England back line. Messi still leads the all-time World Cup scoring list at 21 to Mbappé’s 20 — a separate record, and one Mbappé can equal or pass in Dallas. Team News That Decides the Weekend
Two games, four settled squads, and a handful of calls that will shape the lines:
  • France: the swing is Aurélien Tchouaméni, back in full training after a thigh problem and named in most predicted XIs (one tracker still flags a doubt — watch the official teamsheet about an hour before kickoff). Mbappé is “100% fit” per Deschamps after an ankle knock against Morocco. No suspensions — France’s yellow cards were wiped after the quarter-final.
  • Spain: Nico Williams is pushing to start after a thigh issue; Yéremy Pino is fit (his quarter-final scare was a shoulder sprain, not the feared fracture). No suspensions.
  • England: Quansah is suspended and misses SF2; Jordan Henderson is out for the tournament after wrist surgery; Declan Rice is expected back after an illness that affected him against Norway; Reece James is a fitness doubt. Predicted XI settles around Kane and Bellingham together up top — “put Harry and Jude together, they will do the rest,” in Tuchel’s words.
  • Argentina: Messi starts — an eye knock from the Switzerland game is not serious — and Cristian Romero is fit. No suspensions; Montiel’s booking was wiped after the quarter-final.

Weather and Venues
Both semi-final venues have retractable roofs, and in mid-July that matters. NWS point forecasts retrieved on the morning of 14 July:
  • SF1 AT&T Stadium, Arlington/Dallas — outdoor high near 88°F, mostly sunny with a 40% chance of afternoon showers or storms, light east wind. The roof is likely closed with air-conditioning, making the on-field conditions effectively climate-controlled — a dry, quick surface that favours Spain’s short-passing game and France’s pace in transition.
  • SF2 Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta — outdoor high near 86°F, partly sunny, a 50% chance of showers or storms mainly in the afternoon, light east wind. Again, roof likely closed. Atlanta’s forecast sits at the edge of the reliable window, so expect a firmer read closer to Wednesday.
What It Means for Canadian Viewers
Canada’s own tournament ended in the round of 16 — Morocco knocked Les Rouges out, and Morocco are now gone too, beaten by France in the quarter-final — but the World Cup never really left the country. Toronto and Vancouver hosted matches at BMO Field and BC Place, the FIFA Fan Festivals in both cities run right through to the final on 19 July, and the neutral’s tournament is a genuinely great one. Both semi-finals are on TSN and CTV (with French-language coverage on RDS), with the marquee CTV free-to-air window covering both games and the final. Kickoff for SF1 is 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT — a lunchtime game on the West Coast, a mid-afternoon one in the East. If you are betting from Ontario, the private market is open (Boomerang Bet, BetiBet, MrPacho among the brands); in BC and Quebec the provincial operators (PlayNow, Mise-o-jeu) run the show.
Where the Bracket Ends
Two games decide the final. The winner of France vs Spain plays the winner of England vs Argentina at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, 19 July, 15:00 ET. The two losers meet in the third-place play-off in Miami on Saturday, 18 July. Whatever happens over the next 48 hours, the final will feature a former world champion against a former world champion — the tournament has guaranteed that much. For the full schedule and the bracket as it fills, see our World Cup 2026 bracket; for the live outright board, our World Cup 2026 odds hub.
Our read: France are the rightful favourites, and the outright price says so — but this is the strongest semi-final field the tournament has ever assembled, and “favourite” at 2.37 is a long way from “certainty.” Spain have beaten France in the two most recent meetings that counted; England have home-tournament momentum and a settled spine; Argentina have Messi and the habit of winning knockouts by a single goal. If you want one exposure before the games, the value is in the second-favourite argument — a book that prices Argentina at 4.60 (DraftKings) is offering a genuinely different number from one that has them at 5.50. Shop it. For the picks across both ties, our July 14–15 semi-final predictions has the value angles.
